The police have finally arrested Evans Momberume, the husband of the late Memory Machaya who died during childbirth.
The 14-year-old died on July 15, while giving birth at a Johane Marange Apostolic church shrine. She was allegedly denied medical help and her death was concealed from the authorities. Memory was forced out of school while doing Form One so that she could get married to Evans Momberume, a full-grown man.
Momberume who is reported to be in his mid to late twenties raped the vulnerable teen while hiding behind the guise of marriage.
Following Memory’s death at the shrine, Momberume is reported to have left the shrine and eluded law enforcement officials. He was finally arrested by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department’s Homicide Division in Mutare. This was after the police made the case high priority following massive outrage over the death of memory.
Online publication Zimlive reports that Momberume was arrested on Wednesday, and he is expected to appear in court on Thursday. He has been charged with having sexual intercourse or performing indecent acts with a young person. He faces a sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment and is liable to a fine not exceeding level twelve.

Memory Machaya’s body which was allegedly buried at the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church shrine is yet to be located. Her family insists that her body was buried at the church’s Mafararikwa Shrine in Marange soon after her tragic death.
