Tendai Darikwa Becomes The First Zimbabwean To Captain A European Club To A League Title

Tendai Darikwa has become the first Zimbabwean to captain a European club to a league title after he led football side Wigan Athletic to winning the League One title on Saturday.

The team was promoted to the English Championship after knocking Shrewsbury 3-0 and cementing it’s spot at the top of League One. Wigan returns to the Championship after a two-year dance in the second tier league.

Darikwa was beaming to Wigan Today over the weekend:

I’m so proud – proud of the group and proud of the whole team. It’s been a long, tough season and, after the last few games, we came here with a bit of pressure on us. But we wanted to be champions, and to deliver a performance like that is testament to the group. Days like this don’t always come around in this game. Some of the greatest footballers to have ever played the game didn’t win anything in their careers. Every league, every title is difficult to win, and to cone out on too and win after 46 games is credit to the lads. To stand here now as captain of this team is a huge honour for me.

Darikwa was given the captain’s armband at the beginning of this season, and only missed three out of the gruelling 46 games.

Despite not making it to Cameroon to represent the warriors at the AFCON finals in January, Darikwa has now gotten his massive consolation.-iharare
