Fifa president Gianni Infantino faces intense criticism from football fans, having proposed every nation name a stadium after the late Brazilian legend Pele.

The Brazilian legend passed on last week after battling cancer and kidney problems.

Pele, the only player with three World Cup titles, died aged 82 last Thursday.

However, speaking at Pele’s funeral in Santos on Monday, where family members and football fraternity gathered to pay their last respect to the deceased, Infantino revealed FIFA’s plan of having nations name stadiums after the late Brazilian footballer.

According to the Fifa president, the move to name stadiums after Pele will show respect for his outstanding football achievements.

“We are also going to ask every country in the world to name one of their football stadiums with the name of Pele”.

Infantino’s proposal of having 211 football associations name stadiums after Pele has received a negative response from fans who argued that the move is impractical and ridiculous for other nations who also have their own football legends.

Below are social media users’ comments criticizing the FIFA president for his ‘impractical’ and ‘ridiculous’ statement.

Sounds like a bit too much. He’s a football player, after all. Playing football is fun but not important. Better to name them after inventors and smart people who made discoveries that changed the world.

@BigBrainEni

If we name a stadium in each country after pele, what will happen to other football legends like Maradona, Yekini, Messi, and Ronaldo? You can’t tell all countries what they should do with their stadia unless you’re a major financial stakeholder during the construction.

@ThePanamaRed

This is silly!!! We gonna name a stadium after every legend?? Calm down! FIFA is doing the most 🙄😒
