The lifting of Zimbabwe’s suspension from international football by FIFA came after the Sports and Recreation Commission’s recent decision to revoke their suspension of the Felton Kamambo ZIFA executive, which was the cause behind the initial ban.

On June 20, 2023, FIFA received communication from the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), chaired by Gerald Mlotshwa, stating that they had officially lifted the suspension imposed on the ZIFA board.

Additionally, the SRC informed FIFA that they had withdrawn their status as a complainant in a criminal case against Kamambo and other executives.

FIFA in a letter to ZIFA, however, noted that the Kamambo executive’s four-year term ended in December 2022 and “from a legal point of view it is no longer possible for Kamambo, his fellow board members and general secretary Joseph Mamutse to resume their positions of leadership at ZIFA.”

In its place, FIFA said it was appointing a “normalisation committee which will consist of a suitable number of members who will be appointed by FIFA and CAF.”

The committee will be responsible for various duties, including managing ZIFA’s day-to-day operations, implementing necessary restructuring within the ZIFA administration, reviewing ZIFA statutes and electoral code to ensure alignment with FIFA statutes, acting as an electoral committee to organize and oversee new ZIFA board elections, and ensuring a proper financial transition and handover process.

FIFA has also assigned the committee the responsibility of collaborating with the sports ministry and the SRC to investigate allegations of sexual harassment involving certain former ZIFA executives.

The committee’s mandate will remain in effect until it has completed the assigned tasks or by the latest deadline of June 30, 2024.-iharare
