Caps United gunning for league title

CAPS United president Farai Jere has expressed confidence in his club’s ability to challenge for the premier league title this season.

The Green Machine have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market, bringing in stars such as Kundai Benyu, who once played for Scottish giants Celtic, and Tanaka Shandirwa, who joined from Dynamos, in an attempt to get back to the top.

Another former Dynamos star Juan Mutudza, who was with FC Platinum in recent seasons, has also joined together with his ex-teammates at the Zvishavane miners — Kelvin Mangiza and Brighton Manhire.

The club has also brought in Congolese forward Love Raema Bissila Mabiala and two goalkeepers in Ghanaian Stephen Odai Kwaku and Harmony Nare from ZPC Hwange.

After visiting the team’s training base on Tuesday for a meet and greet session with the players ahead of the start of the new season, Jere praised coach Lloyd Chitembwe for assembling “a monster of a team”.

“If you look at the players that we have brought in, you can see that our intention is very clear. We want to win the league and cups,” he said.

“We want to win things. We are not mincing our words. We are in for exciting times. We want to promise our fans that this is going to be a different year for them.

“They are going to enjoy themselves. It’s one year where our supporters are going to smile because we have a real team. We have assembled a monster of a team.”

Despite losing arguably three of their best players from last season, including two Soccer Stars of the Year finalists Godknows Murwira and Kingsley Mureremba, as well as goalkeeper Tonderai Mateyaunga, Jere believes the squad is more stronger this term than they were in the previous seasons.

He is tipping them to end their nine-year league title drought.

Caps United last won the league title in 2016.

The club’s seasons in the recent past have been blighted by financial problems, with player strikes over salaries and bonuses being the order of the day.

Jere says he has managed to pull resources together for the new campaign, assuring the players that their welfare will be well taken care of.-newsda
