Local

First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa has been granted the Order of the Star of Zimbabwe Gold Award. The award was conferred on the First Lady by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The Order of the Star of Zimbabwe Gold is one of the national honours and awards that were created by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The awards were created in terms of the Honours and Awards Act [Chapter 10:11]. According to Warrant 1 of 2021, Statutory Instrument 213 of 2021, the awards were created to

“grant recognition for outstanding contribution or stellar accomplishments which further the interests of Zimbabwe, arising from the contribution of the luminaries, heroes and heroines of the First Chimurenga, solidarity and friendship of foreigners, selfless dedication to the preservation of Zimbabwe.”

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government broadened the criteria for conferring honours and awards to include civil servants and civilians. Before this, only members of the uniformed forces were eligible for national awards and honours.

The First Lady is just one of the people who will be honoured during the country’s Heroes and Defence Forces Day celebrations. The First Lady is renowned for her philanthropic works and has been championing the causes of society’s vulnerable group such as the disabled, orphans, the elderly, homeless people and commercial sex workers among others.
