Somizi’s Visit To Zimbabwe Hangs In The Balance After Zimbabwean Conservatives Threaten To Block His Visit
South African media personality Somizi Mhlongo’s highly anticipated visit to Zimbabwe is hanging in the balance after Zimbabwean conservatives threatened to block his visit.
Celebrity chef, Somizi, who has proven to be a force to reckon with as a chef through his exclusive show “Dinner at Somizi’s” and his recently launched cookbook titled “Dinner at Somizi’s – I am not a chef”- is scheduled to grace the much-awaited reopening of the iconic Garwe Restaurant in Harare on the 4th of November (tomorrow).
One social media critic wrote on Facebook;
“Somizi is undesirable on Idols South Africa for allegations of abuse and why should we make him desirable in Zimbabwe? Leader Tendai Chirau, please protect our youth and the future from agents of domestic violence and any immoralities!”
The inclusion of Somizi who is openly gay and has of late been accused of abusing his now-estranged partner Mohale Motaung at Garwe Restaurant has got some Zimbabweans on social media freaking out.’
Conservative Zimbabweans on social media threatened to ensure the chef’s trip to Harare is blocked. A section on social media has opined that if the Garwe Restaurant management does not back down on bringing Somizi at their restaurant, they will do like what late Studio 263 actress Anne Nhira did when she blocked Zodwa Wabantu from performing at the Harare International Carnival, citing her pantlessness as a disgrace to Zimbabwe’s norms and values.
However, some Zimbabweans came to Somizi’s defence as they accused those threatening to block him of being hypocrites. They also argued that Somizi’s sexuality had nothing to do with the event as such his sexuality will not in any way affect those who do not agree with his sexual preferences.
“You watch Idols South Africa and do not complain that one of the judges is gay. Why not also celebrate the reopening of Garwe Restaurant even with Somizi at the event?” one social media user opined.
However, in light of these latest developments, it is not clear if he is still going to attend the reopening of Garwe Restaurant regardless of the threats.-iharare
