THE Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) has stepped up efforts to make the third edition of the Crystal Candy National Schools Chess Tournament bigger by calling on all schools to register before tomorrow’s deadline.
ZCF believes the annual event, which is sponsored by Crystal Candy, is a pathway to chess excellence in Zimbabwe.
The Crystal Candy National Schools Chess Tournament is a team-based competition organised by the ZCF Chess in Education Commission in partnership with Crystal Candy, which begins at the grassroots level and culminates in a grand national finale.

Last year, a record total of 125 primary and secondary schools took part in the event, with 37 of them making it to the grand finale, which was held at Northlea High School in Bulawayo.
Gokwe South Primary School Gwehava emerged champions along with Dominican Convent High School.
This year, the finals are pencilled for Manicaland province from March 14 to 17, 2025.
“The Zimbabwe Chess Federation Chess in Education Commission is calling on all primary and secondary schools in Zimbabwe to join this exciting initiative. Registration is now open and schools are encouraged to register via the ZCF offices,” ZCF communications and public relations director Agab Dozva said in a statement.
“The registration deadline is February 14, 2025 (tomorrow), so don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a transformative chess experience.
“The Crystal Candy National Schools Chess Tournament is more than just a competition; it is a movement aimed at promoting chess in schools, fostering a love for the game and unearthing the next generation of chess champions.”
Dozva added: “By participating, schools not only give their students a chance to excel in chess but also contribute to the growth of the sport in Zimbabwe. The ultimate goal is to have chess played in every school across the country, making it an integral part of the educational system.
“This initiative has garnered international recognition, with FIDE [International Chess Federation] Chess in Education chair Jerry Nash visiting Zimbabwe to launch the 1st Edition of the Preparation of Teachers Course.
“This course was a critical step in equipping educators with the skills to teach chess effectively, ensuring that the game becomes an integral part of the educational system.
“The visit by Jerry Nash underscored the global importance of chess in education and highlights Zimbabwe’s commitment to fostering a chess culture among its youth.”
Cluster level competitions will kick off the tournament later this month before zonal and district competitions.
The district games will be held between February 21 and 28, with provincial competitions set to take place between March 3 and 8, 2025 with the winners going to the finals.-newda
