Jah Signal Takes Responsibility, Issues Public Apology to The Charambas Over Unauthorised Song Sampling

Arts and Culture Crime and Court Entertainment

Jah Signal has publicly apologised to the Charambas for sampling their music without their permission after they got two of his hit songs, ‘Shinga Muroora’ (Sweetie) and ‘Tengai Mafuta,’ taken down from YouTube for copyright infringement.

The incident sparked divided opinions among Zimbabweans on various social media platforms. Some felt that Pastors Charles and Olivia Charamba should have been more understanding, considering their Christian beliefs. On the other hand, some argued that Jah Signal should not have proceeded with sampling the songs after being denied permission.

Jah Signal, however, chose to extend an olive branch and publicly apologised to the Charambas on Friday night. He posted a picture of the Charambas and acknowledged them as his respected elders for life. In his brief apology, Jah Signal expressed his love for them and conveyed his sincere remorse.

The apology stirred mixed reactions on social media. Some commended him for taking responsibility and showing humility by apologizing. Others, however, insisted that he should apologize in person rather than through social media. Here are a few responses:

Risk of Another Song Removal
In a related development, Jah Signal appears unrepentant and faces the risk of having another song removed from YouTube. He recently released a new song, which includes lyrics from the late legendary musician Oliver Mtukudzi’s track, “Mbabvu Yangu.”

Whether Jah Signal sought permission before sampling Oliver Mtukudzi’s song remains uncertain.-iharare
