Private School Teacher To Perform 630 Hours Of Community Service

Crime and Court

A private college teacher who made headlines recently after he brutally assaulted a student from his institution has been ordered to perform 630 hours of community service at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals starting tomorrow morning.

Talent Chingwaru, 29, did not waste the court’s time when he pleaded guilty to assault charges after appearing before Harare magistrate Judith Taruvinga.

Initially, Vhungwaru was sentenced to 36 months in prison before 18 months were set aside for five years on condition of good behaviour.

For the remaining 18 months, Chingwaru will perform 630 hours of community service.

During mitigation, Chingwaru blamed his actions on a toothache.

According to court papers, on the 14th of October at around 10:30 am, Chingwaru assaulted an 18-year-old student who later made a report at Harare Central Police Station.

The incident occurred after the Lower Six student was allegedly found in an “O” Level classroom watching movies during lesson time.

The court heard that Chingwaru ordered the student to go back to his class but the student allegedly went to a biology classroom where he coincidentally met the same teacher.

The State proved that a harsh exchange of words ensued resulting in the teacher assaulting the learner.

In the viral video that sparked public outrage, Chingwaru can be seen punching, slapping, and using a belt to beat up the student while other students are heard pleading with Chingwaru to stop saying: “You will hurt him, Sir.”
